Think of a school class. 1 in 4 of those children will suffer from an obesity-led illness such as heart disease or diabetes. One in three will suffer from a mental health problem.
What can we do about it? Yes you can cut out sweets and treats for kids but we all know from personal experience that it doesn't last. This is where the boffins at Reverse The Trend Foundation have cracked it.
We work with children to create healthy habits that will hopefully last a life time. Remember when you were first taught to tie your shoelaces? I bet you still tie them the same way. That's a habit cycle. Working with Neuroscientists, Reverse The Trend Foundation has created the Healthy Happy Child Campaign which employs the Habit Cycle to reinforce physical, nutritional and emotional wellbeing.
Imagine if children were shown how to create healthy habits. Not just physical and nutritional ones, but emotional ones too. Imagine if they could increase their self-esteem, sleep better, express feelings and move more. But we want to make it fun too. That’s why children aged 8-16 help to create our Healthy Challenges.
Working with Directors of Children’s Services and schools, children and their families complete a series of weekly Healthy Habits; a mixture of physical, emotional and nutritional wellbeing activities. Each habit has a neuroscience base, a habit cycle and is coupled with a fun element designed by our children’s advisory board.
The Healthy Happy Child Campaign
- Children and their families will complete a series of fun Healthy Habits
- Using a neuro-scientifically proven method of habit forming challenges the campaign will target physical, nutritional and emotional behaviour
- The campaign will run for fifty-two weeks with weekly engagement with children and families through a paper and app based system
- To date, we have over 700,000 children registered in the UK and 14,000 children have already completed the programme! Following a successful series of pilots, Reverse the Trend Foundation is now rolling out the collaborative programme.
Rather than simply encouraging children to eat less and move more, the Healthy Happy Child programme helps children understand the many causes of obesity, and by identifying the physical and emotional triggers that can lead to overeating, we give them the tools they need to take control through self-regulation. But because they are children, we understand that the only way to engage them is to make it fun! With that in mind, we have implemented the Healthy Happy Child programme to help families achieve a sustainable lifestyle.
